St Stephen's is an oasis of quietness in the middle of one
of Melbourne's busiest areas. The church is open most days for people to come and sit, rest a while, and pray.
Quiet time and contemplation are an important part of regular worship at St Stephen's, and both play a vital role
in informing and sustaining the parish's involvement in social justice.
In 2012 the parish is carrying on a
new initiative by offering Taize-style evening worship once a month.
Taize is a village in France, where an ecumenical
religious community was started by Brother Roger in 1944. Since the 1950s, many young people have made pilgrimages to
the Taize Community to be part of their distinctive style of worship, which is characterised by quiet prayer and music.
Evening prayer is offered at St Stephen's at 8.00pm on the last Thursday of the month.
