St Stephen’s is one of Melbourne’s oldest Churches, and was the eastern-most church of the new city of Melbourne during the 1850s and 1860s. We are proud of our heritage, which includes many of the rites of passage (marriages, baptisms and burials) for Melbourne’s pioneers.
Many people contact us with requests for assistance regarding research into family history. The parish has registers for rites of passage going back to the foundation of the church in 1849, and numerous other records documenting parish life over time. Much of this material is very fragile and requires particular care to ensure its preservation for future generations.
The parish holds only the current registers for baptisms, weddings and funerals. All records and historical material dating from before 1960 are held at the State Library of Victoria. If you wish to research a family member associated with St Stephen’s prior to 1960, please contact the SLV directly by clicking here.
